Gallery: Solar Impulse completes its trans-US flight

Solar Impulse, the first solar-powered aircraft with the capability of flying for over 24 hours, is an odd beast. It's big and yet small. It has an enormous wing that provides a tremendous amount of lift and a huge surface area to fill with the solar panels that power it. But everything about the aircraft is kept as compact as possible to minimize weight and drag. To give you a better perspective on this unique craft, Ars paid it a visit at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport after it completed the first solar-powered flight across the US. Read more about its design and journey here, but check out some images of the machine below.

Solar Impulse is shaped like a glider, with an enormous wing, narrow body, and large tail.

The central landing gear is the only one that's retractable. The ones out on the wings remain extended during flight. The bike in front is used by crew members who pursue the plane during landings to support the wing.
